What Is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough is the common name for infectious bronchitis in dogs. Similar to a cold in humans, it’s usually caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses that affect the respiratory system, leading to coughing. While kennel cough is highly contagious, most cases are mild and resolve on their own within a few days.
How Does Kennel Cough Spread?
Kennel cough is airborne, which means it can spread quickly in places where dogs interact, such as boarding facilities, dog parks, or grooming salons. It can also be transmitted through shared items like food and water bowls or toys. Even common sniff spots—like fire hydrants—can be a source of exposure. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 14 days, and some dogs may carry the infection without showing symptoms.
Vaccination Information
Because kennel cough is caused by multiple bacteria and viruses, no vaccine can provide complete protection. However, vaccines are available for the most common culprits: the Canine Parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica. At Wag N Tails Pet Resort, we require all guests to be current on the Bordetella vaccine to help reduce risk.
Our Commitment to Health
We take every precaution to keep our facility clean and safe, but complete prevention of kennel cough is not possible. Our team follows strict cleaning protocols and uses high-quality sanitizing products daily. If a case is reported, we act quickly to minimize exposure and slow the spread. We believe in transparency—updates are posted on our Facebook page, and you’re always welcome to call us for the latest information.
Thank you for trusting us to care for your pet!
